UCLA Honorary Degree Ceremony
May 15, 2010
Schoenberg Music Building, UCLA
During World War II, 700 Japanese American University of California students were interned and forced from school. Many never returned to complete their degrees. In 2009, for the first time in 37 years, the University of California Board of Regents voted to grant special honorary degrees.
UCLA honored these Japanese American students whose attendance during the 1941-42 academic year was disrupted by Executive Order 9066 at a special ceremony with Chancellor Gene Block, Assemblymember Warren Furutani, and Tritia Toyota. Featured performances included Japanese flute player Bill Shozan Schultz and a student taiko group. Degrees were presented to each of these former students or to their family representative.
