THE UCLA MEDAL

The UCLA Medal is the university’s highest honor. It was created to honor those individuals who have made extraordinary and distinguished contributions to their professions, to higher education, to our society, and to the people of UCLA. Among the recipients are heads of state; renowned scientists, artists, and scholars; peacemakers; social reformers; and visionaries in the realm of commercial enterprise.

The Medal was established as a highlight of UCLA's "Golden Year" celebration in 1979, which marked the 50th anniversary of the Westwood campus. The first recipients were alumni, administrators, and faculty who had made significant contributions to UCLA's early development. Every year since, The UCLA Medal has been awarded at Commencement ceremonies, academic convocations, and other special events to pay tribute to national and international leaders in government, education, science, industry, and the arts.

Bearing the university seal on one side and a depiction of UCLA’s landmark Royce Hall on the other, The Medal is accompanied by a formal citation encased in a gold-embossed folder.
